Apple announces iPhone 5 with 4-inch Retina display, A6 chip, 4G LTE, iOS 6, Lightning connector and more

Apple Inc. finally introduced the newest member of its iPhone lineup, a thinner, lighter and 4G LTE capable smartphone  the iPhone 5.

Apple iPhone 5's sleek design is quite the same as the previous generations but made entirely of glass and aluminum. It's 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S, 7.6 mm/0.30 inch thick to be exact and 58.6 mm/2.31 inches wide; though the same width as 4S, it's 7% taller at 123.8 mm/4.87 inches and 20% lighter, weighs just 112 grams.

It has a 4-inch Multi-Touch screen with a resolution of 1,136 x 640 at 326ppi, still a fingerprint-resistant Retina display but with a better color saturation and full sRGB rendering, which means the display is more sharper and produces less glare. The iPhone 5 has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9 allowing another row of apps on the display screen. Apple optimized first-party apps including the Calender, iWork, iMovie, Garage Band and Siri to name a few.

The iPhone 5 comes with an A6 processor (22% smaller, more energy efficient chip), which will make the device run faster, 2x faster CPU and 2x faster graphics, compare to the previous iPhones.

The new iPhone now supports 4G LTE connectivity (single chip, single radio, dynamic antenna), as many Apple's loyal supporters had predicted, which means it's capable of download speeds up to 100 mbps, double the speed of the iPhone 4S and still be able to connect on GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, and DC-HSDPA cellular networks. Did I mention iPhone 5 will support global 4G LTE connection and an ultrafast wireless connection through 802.11a/b/g/n, 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, up to 150 mbps? Isn't it cool, 4G LTE, dual-channel connection and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology?

The 6th-generation iPhone still comes with an 8-megapixel sensor camera (a hybrid IR filter, 5-element lens, and f/2.4 aperture), same as the iPhone 4S but 25% smaller. It also features 40% faster photo capture, supports panorama mode and dynamic low light mode to give users a 28 megapixels widescreen and smarter pictures without using the LED flash respectively, as well as a precision lens alignment and Sapphire lens crystal cover which made the iSight camera durable and clear.

Improved video stabilization, 1080p HD video up to 30 frames per second with audio, tap and autofocus, take photos while on record mode, and an upgraded 1.2 megapixels front-facing camera, 720p HD video up to 30 fps, backside illumination, face detection in both video and still images. Apple also added that FaceTime HD now works both the Wi-Fi and over cellular networks.

The iPhone 5 runs the world's most advanced mobile operating system  iOS 6. It includes amazing features such as the new Maps app in 3D, new full-screen view of Safari similar to the desktop version, share tabs from desktop to iPhone via the iCloud Tabs, new enhancements to Mail, Passbook app for coupons and movie tickets, the Photos app where you can share photos through the Photo Stream, as well as an updated Siri. iOS 6 will become available on September 19th, which all iOS mobile devices, the 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, new iPad and 4th-gen iPod touch are getting the operating system upgrade.

Apple revamped the iPhone's dock connector, replacing the 30-pin connector with an 80% smaller, double-sided, easier to use connector called the "Ligthning". iPhone advancements also include multiple microphones (on the front, back and bottom) and a "wideband audio" technology to improve and make voice calls sound more natural as well as Siri's performance, plus a noice recognition and reduction earpiece.

The iPhone 5 features up to 8 hours talk time on 3G, 14 hours of video on a single battery charge. The mobile device will also offer 8 hours on 3G or LTE talk and browsing time, and up to 10 hours battery life on Wi-Fi.

Like its precessor, the iPhone 5 will be available in both white (has raw aluminum back) and black versions (has black anodized back), price starting at $199 for a 16GB model, $299 for 32GB model and $399 for 64GB model (on contract-pricing). It will be available on the 21st of September in the US and selected countries including Canzda, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia. The availability of the smartphone in other countries is expected by the end of the year.

Along with the All-new EarPods, next-gen iPod nano and iTunes 11, Apple also announced the new iPod touch, which runs the iOS 6 and comes in different colour variants: pink, yellow, blue, white & silver, black & slate. A 32GB iPod touch is priced at $299 and a 64GB model at $399. It will be available for pre-order through the Apple Online Store on September 14.
